 There are four libraries in the Anchorage bowl, one in Eagle River, and one in Girdwood. Anyone who has an Anchorage library card can check-out books one of more than 66,000 books at these libraries, as well as the UAA-APU Consortium Library. The Z.J. Loussac Library located at 36th Avenue and Denali Street is the main branch. All of the libraries in town have computers for public use with internet access to complement their book collection.
Obtaining a library card
Anyone who lives in Anchorage can get a library card for free. If you do not already have a library card, you can download the application form from the library’s website and then bring it to any library. Anyone who is not yet 18 must have a parent or guardian with them. A photo I.D. is also needed to confirm identity.
Using a library card
Books can be checked out at any of the Anchorage Libraries for three weeks. If you keep the books longer than three weeks, they are overdue and you will be fined for not returning them on time. In addition to books, the library has over 43,000 CDs, tapes, videos, and DVDs. This multimedia collection contains all genres of music, and many popular and award winning movies.
The library online
At the library’s website, all sorts of information pertaining to books, studying, current events, and hundreds of links to other useful sites on the internet is available. The library has two areas devoted to youth, a kids guide and a teens guide. These sites have information on fun activities, good books, and other fun links.
Volunteering (website)
The library is always looking for good volunteers. Shelving volunteers are trained how to properly shelve books and the main qualification is attention to detail and accuracy! In the summers, the Volunteen program brings area teenagers in to help with the summer reading program for younger kids.
