The Volunteer Internship Program
Internships with the Municipality of Anchorage provide an excellent opportunity for students to gain valuable first-hand experience, and in some cases, school credit in various fields.  Internships are available in almost every city department.

The departments in the municipality provide multiple opportunities for interested students.  Below, you can review the great internship experiences of our past interns.

Summer 2007

Kayla Rudolf - Office of Emergency Management

My name is Kayla Rudolf and I was one of the 2007 summer interns at the Office of Emergency Management.

As a public information intern, I was tasked with a multitude of things this summer.  Between projects such as writing press releases to creating the Incident Management Team plan, I discovered a greater understanding of what goes on in the lifestyle of a public information officer.

I am originally from Portland, Oregon  and traveled to the great state of Alaska just for the summer.  I will be a junior this fall at the University of Idaho, where I am majoring in public relations, obtaining my minor in communications and an emphasis in psychology.  I have loved my time spent here at the Office of Emergency Management and have learned a great deal from my mentors.  I thank the City of Anchorage and the EOC for giving me this spectacular experience.

Jennifer Wooley - Office of Emergency Management

My name is Jennifer Wooley, and I will be entering my sophomore year at the University of San Diego this fall. I applied for an internship with the Office of Emergency Management shortly after returning home after my freshman year of college. This internship seemed exciting, and promised a definite change of pace from usual summer jobs. I was not disappointed - within the first week of my internship, I had responded to a fire alongside Public Information Officer RaeShaun Schmidt and attended a "dirty bomb" exercise, involving the fire department and local hospitals.

Although these events were not daily occurences, the internship always remained exciting. I was charged with reviewing the Metropolitan Medical Response System (MMRS) grant, and made a number of recommendations to the city regarding its implementation. I also worked with Kattaryna Stiles regarding the disaster registry for the vulnerable population within the Municipality of Anchorage. I even got a chance to sit in at the desk of the Senior Office Associate, Nikki Stokoe, and direct phone calls from around the city. This was a great opportunity to experience an executive position, and I have learned more about local government than I would have expected. I am quite glad that I applied, and am sure that this professional experience will be beneficial wherever I go.
