12th Annual

2008 Good News! Great Kids! Winners Chosen

Program Recognizes Outstanding Youth

Ten outstanding high school seniors, representing six Anchorage high schools have been chosen as this year’s winners of the Good News! Great Kids! program. Each year, the program honors students who are doing well in school, have overcome a challenge and are active in community service.

Started a dozen years ago, Good News! Great Kids! is a partnership between the Mayor’s Office, the Anchorage Daily News, AT&T, and the University of Alaska. This year nearly 50 nominees were submitted. From that group, 20 were interviewed by a committee representing all of the partners, and 10 winners were ultimately chosen.

“This is a great opportunity to inform the community about some of Anchorage’s finest high school students,” Mayor Mark Begich said. “We are pleased to be able to recognize young people who are already making a difference in our city.”

This year’s winners are:

Chugiak High School - Melissa Apodaca, Kairi Berg, Shade Jalo, Thomas Snider;
Grace Christian School – Ariel Burr, Ryan Cox;
Steller Secondary – Sam Holley-Kline;
Bartlett High School – Alyssa Hoskie;
South Anchorage High School – Jack Matha;
East High School – Anita Nickerson.

The Good News! Great Kids! winners will be featured in a special newspaper announcement in early April saluting their achievements and telling their stories. They will also be honored at a banquet attended by Mayor Begich, UA President Mark Hamilton, Supt. Carol Comeau and others. At the banquet each recipient is asked to name the educator/mentor who has been most inspirational in their lives. That person is presented with the Mayor’s CREATE (Community Recognition for Educational Teaching and Excellence) Award.

The Good News! Great Kids! program is open to high school juniors and seniors. The nomination process takes place each fall.
