Anchorage’s presentation highlighted three programs to demonstrate community involvement in addressing challenges. They included:

2001 Special Olympics Winter Games, which demonstrate the high level of volunteerism in Anchorage; |

Youth Court which promotes youth involvement in the judicial system; |
|
•
|
Bridge Builders, a grassroots community effort to build racial harmony and mutual respect and understanding |
In addition to Anchorage, the other nine All-America Cities for the year 2002 are:
• Tuscaloosa-Northport Region, Alabama
• Fountain, Colorado
• Elgin, Illinois
• Roswell, New Mexico
• Buffalo-Niagara Region, New York
• Huntington, New York
• Weslaco, Texas
• Hampton, Virginia
Since the program began in 1949, more than 4,000 communities have competed and nearly 500 have been named All-America Cities. Anchorage has won the award three other times over the past 50 years.
