Chair Comments

On July 26, 1990, Congress passed the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This landmark legislation recognized the barriers faced by people with disabilities and mandates accessibility of all citizens.  It was the day that disabled people were recognized as fellow community members and for their abilities versus their differences.  It was a day of empowerment and equality.  Approximately 43 million Americans have one or more physical or mental disabilities.  That number will continue to grow as our population ages.  It is essential we continue the momentum to create a barrier free community for those who experience a disability.  It is the goal of the ADA Commission to help Anchorage embrace the ADA and continue to make our city a great place to live, work and visit.
