ABC Read and Talk with Me Anchorage

The first years of a child’s life are a period of incredible growth. They are also a very important time to help children build early language and literacy skills. Taking the time every day to share books, tell stories, sing songs, and just talk with your child will help make sure they are ready to read, ready to learn, and ready to succeed in school and life.

Anchorage has wonderful resources to help parents and caregivers find fun ways to share books and stories with children. Through the “ABC Read and Talk with Me Anchorage” project, we hope to make sure every Anchorage child under the age of 6 has the books, knowledge and support to succeed in school and life.

We are working with Child Care Connection, the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program, Best Beginnings, Child Care Assistance and others to distribute more than 5,000 books bags to Anchorage children under the age of 6. We are also working with Child Care Connection to encourage more child care providers to improve their understanding of brain development and the importance of sharing books with children from the time they are born.

Please explore this web site to learn more about this exciting new project, how sharing books and stories with children enhances early brain development, and the community resources available to help Anchorage families.
