Carrs/Safeway & Blockbuster VIDEO
Support AFD's Firewise Efforts FOR THE 4th YEAR!

For the fourth year in a row, Carrs/Safeway and Blockbuster Video are supporting AFD’s firewise public education program. Both rental outlets are making available “free” check out of the Telly award-winning interactive DVD “Firewise Landscaping”, which is the continuation in the Northland Wildfires series.

Various homeowners are interviewed, sharing their creative and practical ideas for their landscaping around their home and property, and at the same time being firewise.  This interactive DVD covers such areas as design ideas, firewise zones, ground cover vegetation and hardscape, perennials, rock gardens, ponds, deciduous shrubs and trees, plus easy maintenance tips.

Shareen Crosby, Blockbuster Video Operations Manager, said “We’re eager again this year to make this landscaping DVD available in all our stores during wildfire season!”

In addition, both rental outlets will, again, stock the 2-disc DVD set of Northland Wildfires “Lessons Learned” and “Staying Prepared” for free check out in all their stores statewide. This 2-set DVD set educates the public on wildfire preparedness through the interactive features in “Staying Prepared”, explaining the measures that are being taken by the Fire Department’s to address the wildfire threat, such as fuels reduction, public education, and wildfire training. The DVD “Lessons Learned”   provides an overall educational documentary of the wildfire danger in South Central Alaska, based on the Miller’s Reach-Big Lake wildfire in 1996.

Darrell Hess of the video rental division for Carrs/Safeway said, “The Northland Wildfire series is important and the landscape DVD makes it more appealing to our customers.”

In addition, the entire three-part Firewise Series is available through the Anchorage Municipal Libraries.
