APD, ACS PUT UPDATED, MORE ACCURATE ADDRESS VERIFICATION SYSTEM ON LINE IN MAY, 2006.
Call-in number 565-6789 gives address in 911
Emergency Services database.
To help insure the accuracy of address information that emergency responders have to get to incidents or medical emergencies, citizens are encouraged to call the Address Verification Service number at 565-6789. Callers can then confirm for themselves and the Municipality that the address is correct, or press the key for the option to report an error.
This system, which is a successor to the original MOA/ACS system, looks directly into the current emergency services database and is up-to-the second information. The previous system had information that could be as much as a week behind. This live, dynamic access of address information can shorten the error-correcting process from as long as a week to three days. Anchorage is among the first of cities instituting this type of enhancement to public safety.
ADDRESS VERIFICATION SYSTEM
Caller dials 565-6789.
A computer-generated voice announces the address listed in the 9-1-1 system.
The caller is then prompted to press a key on the telephone to confirm that the address is correct or to press another key if the address is incorrect.
If the address is correct, the caller is finished.
If the address is incorrect, the system will prompt the caller to record the correct information.
The system supplier (ACS) then coordinates investigation of the reported error with the Municipal addressing department the telephone company and the 911 center, to insure that the address is corrected. If the caller says the address is incorrect but the Municipality determines that the address is, in fact correct, the caller will be contacted. The commitment from all agencies involved to “close the loop” on every error report is another new feature of the system.
LIMITATIONS
The call-in system is available to all Municipal residents, including Eagle River and Chugiak but Girdwood and some other Turnagain Arm communities do not have all locations addressed. This is expected to be completed by late 2006.
In addition, the system will not identify the location of a cell phone caller. APD is bringing this type of equipment on line for actual 911 purposes but the address verification system will not have it. DO NOT CALL 9-1-1 FROM A CELL PHONE UNLESS IT IS AN EMERGENCY!
Finally, it is vital to note that the system will not identify the location of callers using a key system or Private Branch Exchange (PBX), as many businesses and large institutions use. PBXs have a special relationship with the phone company and unless they are equipped with their own Automatic Location Information (ALI) device the address may not reflect the actual location of the caller. The Municipality is the first large organization to have such ALI equipment and encourages others to have them installed.
The system currently does not TTY/TDD-capable. TTY/TDD callers should contact their phone company for address verification. TTY/TDD user ONLY may call 786-8900 before noon to verify their address.
