Traffic Engineering

Traffic Engineering Division

The Traffic Engineering Division encompasses several very important sections of the Traffic Department, including Safety, Signals, and Data sections, all of which play key roles in the development and maintenance of municipal roadways and the safety of both drivers and pedestrians within the Municipality of Anchorage.

Safety Section

Cruising Road

The Safety Section performs a multitude of important tasks, such as developing design recommendations for Capital Improvement Projects (CIP), intersection channelization, community traffic and safety improvement projects, conducting reviews for platting, planning, zoning, and building permit issues as well as investigating and maintaining traffic control signage and street name signs. Signals Section

Not only does our Signals Section manage traffic signal operations and system timing for all municipal and state signals, but they are also responsible for providing the installation, inspection, maintenance and construction support for the signal system. Data Section

Placing Counter Hose

The Data Section collects and analyzes traffic flow information on roadways and trails.  This includes: traffic volumes, various studies, accident information, and other travel related data. The gathered information is used for traffic analysis, design, planning, and to generate traffic statistics. Noted traffic trends help point out areas where improvements could be performed to increase the safe and efficient movement of traffic within the municipality.
