Radio TowerThe Municipal Communications Section is responsible for maintaining the vital communication links between different city agencies. Not only do they provide 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week maintenance and repair support to public safety emergency response vehicles and radio communication systems, but they also maintain all wireless communication systems, end user equipment, radio fire alarm maintenance and are responsible for the compliance and administration of over 50 FCC Radio Station licenses.

Major communications systems maintained and supported by the Communications Section include:

  • 14 site Digital Microwave system, stretching from Hope to Knik.
  • 3 site, 10 channel simulcast 800Mhz trunk radio system with over 2500 users. 
  • 8 channel multi cast/voting UHF radio system used by APD with 800 users.
  • Anchorage-wide paging terminal with over 750 users.
  • APD and AFD Dispatch Center radio consoles and specialty vehicles.
  • Communications support for the Emergency Operations Center and Alternate Dispatch Center.
