Pedestrian Fatality on Glenn Highway

On 10-3-09 at 23:30 hours Anchorage Police Dispatch received a request for a welfare check on a male walking next to the Glenn Highway north of the North Birchwood exit. The caller said that the individual was carrying a cane and wearing dark clothing.  An officer was dispatched immediately but did not see the pedestrian and did a traffic stop on a bus in that area in the outbound lanes.  Another officer responded to the area and saw vehicles stopped in the inbound lanes just south of the South Peter's Creek exit.  When he arrived at that scene at 00:16 hours he found that a male pedestrian wearing dark clothing had been struck while walking in the centermost inbound lane by a Ford Taurus.  The Taurus was driven by 20 year old Heather Pollock of Wasilla.

Despite efforts by the officer and medics to resuscitate the victim, he was declared deceased at a local hospital where he had been transported by ambulance.  The victim, whose description matched that of the subject in the earlier welfare check, has been tentatively identified, but positive identification and next of kin notification have not been completed.
