Renaissance Zone

In 1997, the Renaissance Zone was adopted by the Municipality as an area in which many of the CDBG and HOME activities would be focused. Encompassing most of the northern tier of the Municipality, the Renaissance Zone includes neighborhoods with a significantly higher concentration of low- to moderate-income individuals, fewer single family detached homes, and lower home-ownership rates than the rest of the Municipality. More than half (52% per 1990 census data) of all residents in the Renaissance Zone have low to moderate incomes, as defined by HUD.
The Renaissance Zone has attracted fewer home-owners than the Municipality as a whole. Of existing housing units, single-family homes constitute 21% in the Renaissance Zone, while they make up 42% city wide. Similarly, the ownership rate in the Renaissance Zone lies at 28%, contrasting with the city-wide rate of 46%.
