AWARE NEIGHBORHOODS

AWARE Neighborhoods is a Neighbor to Neighbor project that developed as a result of the MOA AWARE Program and the new national Citizen Corps program. Through AWARE Neighborhoods, communities will gain the skills, experience and resources to discourage crime, to prepare for emergencies, and to foster a sense of community spirit and civic responsibility.
Because each community is unique, the AWARE Neighborhoods program will encourage citizens to design a program that best fits their neighborhood resources. Each neighborhood is encouraged to incorporate local schools and agencies in the planning process and to seek the support of local businesses.
The Municipality of Anchorage has convened an AWARE Neighborhoods working committee to provide support for local planning committees. The AWARE Neighborhoods working committee is comprised of local law enforcement professionals, neighborhood activists and representatives from volunteer public safety organizations. These advisors will provide the professional expertise necessary to develop an effective program. AWARE Neighborhoods should include some or all of the following components:
PROGRAMS/PROJECTS
- Elements of the Neighborhood Watch program
- A structural fire or wildfire safety program
- Terrorism education
- Earthquake response
- Special needs assistance (for elderly, homebound or disabled)
- Evacuation plan and drill
- Yearly block party
- Children safety program
TOOLS
- Phone tree to report current concerns (missing child, recent crime, suspicious individual)
- Email tree to for education and information (photos of missing child, stolen items, etc.)
- Evacuation/help cards
- Home emergency supply kits
- Identified emergency shelter with supplies

- Block Watcher/Block Captain
- Community Patrol
- CERT team
- Medical lead
