Matt Claman first came to Alaska in 1980 to work in a remote mining camp. He is married to Lisa Rieger, who works for Cook Inlet Tribal Council. Their two children, Maia and Benjamin, attend Anchorage public schools and are active in the community. They have made Anchorage their home since 1990. Matt was raised in Texas and graduated from Colorado College in 1981 with a degree in history. He later attended the University of Texas Law School, graduating with honors in 1987. An experienced trial attorney, Matt maintains a diverse law practice working for individuals, businesses, and families. He has worked for the State of Alaska, taught at UAA, worked with major law firms, and managed his own small law business. In addition to his service on the Assembly, Mr. Claman is President of the Board of Governors of the Alaska Bar Association and has served on the boards of several non-profit organizations in Anchorage.

Matt Claman and his family are active Alaskans who make the most of Anchorage’s community and outdoor opportunities. They enjoy music, hiking, theater, skiing, good food, biking and boating. Matt is an Emergency Medical Technician and a nationally-licensed river guide. He has shared his knowledge of team sports by volunteering as an assistant coach for youth hockey and basketball teams—both boys and girls. Matt brings energy, stamina and enthusiasm to serving on the Assembly. Mr. Claman’s commitment to family, understanding of community values, diverse experience, and varied skills are well-suited to serving our community on the Anchorage Assembly.

Matt Claman represents West Anchorage, Spenard, and Sand Lake on the Assembly. His current term expires in 2010.
