Does traffic on your street resemble the Indy 500?
Some Solutions for neighborhoods:
1. Talk to your neighbors!
Spend an evening or two and go door knocking with another neighbor. Introduce yourself and your concern. Create a nice flyer (try humor) reminding people to slow down and watch out for kids and critters. Use an approach that suggests: “we’re all making an effort together”. That way, it is more likely that what you have to say will be received. You might be surprised at how many others agree with you and will thank you for taking the time and effort to do something.
2. Request a SMART Cart unit for your street. Call APD CSO Peggy Johnson at 786-8793. While the SMART units may or may not slow traffic, a computer records (but does not photograph) valuable data which can be used by citizens to substantiate their claims when advocating for slower speed limits or speed humps in their neighborhood. SMART data records volume of traffic, averaged traffic speeds in 15 minute intervals, the hour of the day and highest recorded speed.
3. Speed Humps. Call the Traffic Department 343-8406.
*OPTIONS: Homeowners may wish to pool their financial resources to purchase permanent speed humps. It is illegal for anyone to purchase and install their own speed humps without first coordinating with the Traffic Engineering Department
