Starting Salary: $17.35/hr (as of July 2008)

Additional Pay Increases:

  • 3% Swing Shift Differntial
  • 6% Mid Shift Differential
  • 4% For An Associate's Degree
  • 8% For A Bachelor's Degree

Nature of Work:
Type various reports, letters and memoranda. Enter data from police reports into computer systems. Compose routine correspondence. Greet the public both in person and by phone. Receive complaints, answer questions, and provide information. Respond to telephone calls and route calls to appropriate individual or unit for action. Provide court testimony as required. Gather and compile information and produce reports as assigned. Perform various filing, copying, sorting, phone and other clerical duties.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent AND two years of work experience involving office clerical duties.
  • Certification of ability to type at least 35 WPM must be less than one year old.
  • Must pass initial testing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prefer applicants with experience or education in gathering and entering statistical information into spreadsheets, databases, and similar programs.
  • Prefer applicants with skill in the use of the full range of office equipment, word processing equipment, and computer terminals used in support of department operations.

Selection Process:

  • Initial testing for Police Clerk will consist of a Nelson/Denny Reading Comprehension Exam. Further testing will consist of a Personal History Questionnaire (preliminary to the background investigation), assessment interview, oral boards, and background investigation.
  • If selected, as a condition of employment, the person(s) (including current department employees) selected will be required to successfully complete a drug test prior to beginning work.

Hours of Work:
Applicants must be willing and able to work various shifts as determined by the supervisor.
