ANCHORAGE POLICE DEPARTMENT LATERAL PROGRAM
8 Week Academy + Condensed FTO = Welcome to Anchorage!
The academy is 8 weeks long and operates Monday thru Thursday, 0700-1800 hours and is a non-residential program. The wage while in the academy is $27.89 per hour. This will be an accelerated program covering a variety of topics to include: defensive tactics, firearms, Municipal Ordinances, department policy and procedures, EVOC, officer survival, Intoximeter refresher, and others. Upon successful completion of the academy the officer will move to the Lateral FTO program. Be sure to review the entry level study guide before showing up for the test. Lateral applicants are processed using the standard APD hiring process.
You will also be required to provide written records establishing that you meet the APSC qualifications. The paperwork that you need to bring with you to testing is:
Lateral Qualifications -To qualify you must meet the following APSC (Alaska Police Standards Council) requirements and be able to produce supporting documents.

Hourly Wages-The following wage information does not include: 3% swing shift or 6% mid shift differential, 4% Associate's Degree or 8% Bachelor's degree pay increase, specialty pay, or any future pay increases obtained from contract negotiations. The step increase dates are based on the academy starting in May 2008.

Leave-There are three types of leave available; annual, sick and comp time.
Annual Leave

Accrues 8.31 hours every 2 weeks for first 5 years = 5.4 weeks of annual leave

Accrual increases to 9.23 for 5-10 years of service = 6 weeks of annual leave

Accrual increases to 10.15 after 10 years of service = 6.6 weeks of annual leave

Sick Leave

Accrues at 6 hours every 2 weeks

If you work on a holiday you get paid 2.5 times your normal pay

If the holiday falls on your day off you can choose between 10 hours of extra pay or 10 hours of annual leave
Retirement
Public Employee Retirement System-All employees enrolled into PERS operated by the State of Alaska. Tier level is determined by employees date of entry into PERS. There are also three other additional retirement programs.
