Nature of Work:
Under the supervision of a Police Communications Clerk III, the Communications Clerk II answers emergency and non-emergency calls, transfers certain calls to the Anchorage Fire Department and other agencies, gathers and provides explicit information from callers necessary for proper response by officers to a call, dispatches police personnel to calls for service using radio and telecommunications equipment, prioritizes calls for service according to the nature of the call, transcribes communications from Patrol Officers during radio contact, and retrieves and disseminates information from local, state, and national databases.
Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent AND three years of work experience which involved a substantial amount of public contact and office clerical duties, of which one year must have involved answering calls that include gathering and providing information from callers necessary for proper response; prioritizing calls, and retrieving and disseminating information.

Certification of ability to type at least 35 WPM must be less than one year old.

Must pass initial testing.
Selection Process:

Initial testing for Police Dispatcher will consist of a Communication Clerk/Operator Exam, a Nelson/Denny Reading Comprehension Exam and a Personal History Questionnaire (preliminary to the background investigation), assessment interview, oral boards, and background investigation.

If selected, as a condition of employment, the person(s) (including current department employees) selected will be required to successfully complete a psychological assessment and interview, audio exam and drug test prior to beginning work.
Hours of work:
The present shifts are: 7AM-7PM (days) and 7PM-7AM (mids). Bidding for shifts takes place every four months. Seniority within the Emergency Communications unit determines bid rights. New hires should expect to work weekends and holidays.
