Chief of Police Biography

Kevin O'Leary
May 1988 - January 1997

Chief O'Leary joined the Department in January 1974 and served two and one-half years in the Patrol Section prior to his transfer to Investigations as coordinator of the Burglary Suppression Unit.  In January 1978 he was promoted to Corporal and returned to Patrol.  In March 1979 O'Leary was promoted to Sergeant and assigned to supervise the Police Community Relations Section.  In September 1981 O'Leary was promoted to Lieutenant and transferred to Property Crimes where he served as commander of that section until he was transferred to the Staff Inspection Section.  O'Leary was appointed Chief of Police in 1988.

O'Leary received an Associate degree in Social Psychology from Corning Community College in 1969, served two years with VISTA, returned to college and achieved a B.A. degree in Criminology from the University of Albuquerque in 1973.
