Nature of Work:
Under the supervision of a Communications Clerk III, the Communications Clerk I answers emergency and non-emergency telephone calls, transfers certain calls to the Anchorage Fire Department and other agencies, gathers and provides explicit information from callers necessary for proper response by officers to a call, prioritizes calls for service according to the nature of the call, and retrieves and disseminates information from local, state and national databases. Incumbents may, upon successful completion of training, have the opportunity to continue training for the next higher level of job class should such vacant positions exist.
Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent AND two years of work experience involving a substantial amount of public contact and office clerical duties. A four-year degree may substitute for one of the years of work experience.

Certification of ability to type at least 35 WPM must be less than one year old.

Must pass initial testing.
Selection Process:

Initial testing for Police Call Taker will consist of a Communication Clerk/Operator Exam, a Nelson/Denny Reading Comprehension Exam and a Personal History Questionnaire (preliminary to the background investigation), assessment interview, oral boards, and background investigation.

If selected, as a condition of employment, the person(s) (including current department employees) selected will be required to successfully complete a psychological assessment and interview, audio exam and drug test prior to beginning work.
Hours of work:
The present shifts are: 7AM-7PM (days) and 7PM-7AM (mids). Bidding for shifts takes place every four months. Seniority within the Emergency Communications unit determines bid rights. New hires should expect to work weekends and holidays.
