Report a Problem Address
We recognize that nobody likes to have their address changed; however, in order to provide a consistent and logical application of addresses throughout the municipality, we know that sometimes a change is necessary. Our goal is proper, sequential, logical addresses, since they play such a critical role in emergency response. We don’t want an ambulance or other emergency responder to waste precious time trying to locate a non-conforming address.
Changes Covered by Municipal Code Regulations
Anchorage Municipal Code Rgulations states the reasons we may need to change an address, which include:
- numbers which are out of sequence with their neighbors.
- odd numbers on the even side of the street, or vice versa.
- numbers not matching the block number as defined by the overall address grid.
- not using the street name that provides access to the home or building.
- street name changes.
Who Gets Notified of a Change?
When an address change is determined necessary, we contact the property owner by letter, stating why, what, and when the change will take place. Because we understand such a change can be inconvenient, we notify other municipal agencies, US Postal Service, utility companies and emergency response for the property owner. Also, the US Postal Service allows mail to be delivered to both the old address and the new address for a period of 6 months or longer, to help with the transition.
