Child Care
Title 21 of the municipal code currently defines four classes of child care services:
- Day care means a service providing for the supervision, education or counseling of any number of children for a period not to exceed 18 hours per day. Such services may include babysitting and academic, medical and social programs.
- Child care facility, 24-hour means a service providing for the supervision, education or counseling of any number of children without restriction on the time of service. Such service may include babysitting or residential care, and academic, medical and social programs.
- Family care means care provided in a single dwelling unit, as a home occupation, to five children or less for a period not to exceed 18 hours per day. The service is primarily babysitting but may include educational programs.
- Family residential care means care provided in a single dwelling unit, in a family setting, for ten children or less, without restriction on the time that services are provided.
These are regulated both by Zoning Code Compliance and by the municipal Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS.) Building Safety Handout #47 lists the building code (Title 23) requirements for the structure, and includes a copy of the child care matrix found in AMC 21.45.180 (this lists which types of child care services are permitted in each zoning district.)
