Avalanche Hazards

In 1982 the Municipality commissioned a study of avalanche hazards from Chugiak to Turnagain Arm.  The study defined two levels of avalanche hazard:

  • Blue zone (moderate hazard - 1% annual probability)
  • Red zone (high hazard - 10% annual probability)

The study does not have the force of law, but recommends that:

  • "Buildings can be permitted in the blue zone if they are reinforced for design-avalanche loads.  In certain locations, avalanches can be stopped or deflected away from buildings ...."
  • "Buildings and other facilities that concentrate human activity should be excluded from the red zone."

The avalanche hazard maps, and the study document itself, may be reviewed at the Planning Department.

Avalanche hazards are also mapped in the Anchorage Coastal Resource Atlas, which may be reviewed at the Planning Department or the Z. J. Loussac library.
