Trail Reports - September 2005

  • Where are the new signs recently announced by the Mayor and the news channels. I rode from Westchester Park to Lake Otis to Goose Lake and saw not one sign save the Goose Lake Bridge. Please call me and tell me where the signs are...Thanks  Signs are still in the process of being installed, the one that the Mayor installed was the first.
  • Homeless drinking camp. Vicinity of A street east of A north of the creek south of the baseball field at Mulchay. Occupied by four or five people. The camp is in a hollow spot in the ground and barely visible from the trail. Time 4 PM 26 September 2005… Reported to APD & CWS
  • Grass and brush cutting operations along the bike path from Fort Richardson to Eagle River has left a huge accumulation of cuttings on the path. The debris left ranges from grass to branches and in one instance a piece of pipe. When is the path going to get swept? I would like to be notified when you expect to have this done. Thanks Reported to State of Alaska
  • 9/19/05, 4PM: tree across half the trail at mile 8.2 on the Coastal Trail, about a mile down the hill from the Kincaid Chalet. Reported to maintenance
  • Sunday Sept 11 - 4 pm-ish There were beer cans scattered along the trail near the Chester Creek Sports Complex (the bridge over the creek that is part of the main path) plus a lot of garbage piles from behind Cal Worthington's shop west to around Arctic. Many of the garbage piles were on the informal trails next to the creek as opposed to the paved trail, but some were on the side of the paved trail. Also, we saw the police patrolling for an inebriated person who had hassled a woman - just before that we saw 3 different men slink off the trail between the highway underpass and Arctic - seems like there are some new encampments which are visible from the path.
  • CT-1,CT-2, CH-1. Sunday, September 11. 7:15-8:00 AM. Chilly and kind of dark this morning, with few trail users out and about for the first half of the patrol. Had an unauthorized camper over-nighting in the frisbee golf area at Westchester Lagoon (complete with tent) and another male sleeping on the bench overlooking the inlet at the high spot just south of Hannah Cove. I checked on the sleeper and he was OK and seemed with it, so I left him w/out calling CSP. Evidence of camps and/or drinking on the Chester Creek Trail in the vicinity of Cal Worthington's car dealership. I noticed bags of empty bottles and cans by the side of the trail and ran RIGHT OVER a broken beer bottle in the trail. No flats, luckily. No new graffiti, but I see that the signs at the A street underpass have some spray paint on them. Otherwise all clear. Got a little too close to a young bull moose at the Earthquake Park Parking lot. He was on the other side of a fence so we just startled each other and went about our business. No other wildlife or problems to report.
  • CT-1, CT-2, CH-1. Thursday, September 8. 6:00 - 8:00 PM. Busy night on the Coastal Trail tonight. The sun pulled walkers, joggers, dog-walkers and bikers out. No suspicious activity and no wildlife to report. A few maintenance issues, however: There is currently broken glass on the Coastal Trail just south of Resolution Plaza. It looks like a bottle got tossed out of the parking lot above the trail. That needs to get seeped up when possible. The spot where gravel was eroding on to the trail near this location is still in good shape, despite all the rain recently. Maybe that finally got fixed. The vulgar graffiti at Earthquake Park has been covered up. No new graffiti was found on the Chester Creek trail at the usual locations, and the A street bridge graffiti has also been covered up. No glass in the parking lots at Earthquake Park or Lyn Ary (for a change) as of this date.
  • 9/1/2005 CT1, CT2 and CH1 No unusual events. No wildlife spotted. The entire trail and general area is devoid of graffiti and litter. I did notice several cyclist riding fast and pass without warning. I gave a TW card to a regular walker and she will consider joining TW. I am leaving for Florida and the Gulf Coast on FEMA assignment next Tuesday so I will not be riding the trails each Thursday morning. I will ride again when returning.
  • CT-1,CT-2, CH-1. Thursday, Sept. 1. 5:45-7:00 PM. Graffiti: Earthquake Park interpretive sign/sculpture has a vulgar anti-Bush slogan spray painted in black on the bottom of the pillars, facing the water. Also, new graffiti appeared on the C street underpass on the Chester Creek trail. This is silver and less obvious, but still an eyesore. No other graffiti noted on the other bridges in the area. Some broken beer cups are laying in the parking lot at Lyn Ary Park. I looked for any evidence of under age drinking parties at the overlook but did not see any obvious signs of partying at the overlook. Lots of trail users out tonight but no problems otherwise. Lots of people were checking out the solar system sculptures and signs at Westchester. I think that will be a big hit. Also, the trail map that got posted at Elderberry park gets looked at a lot, too.  Reported to graffiti busters
