Trail Report - October 2004

  • Friday, October 15, we walked between E Street and Gambell on Chester Creek trail. There were three camps, two tents and a tarp. One was just about 100 feet east of A Street on the north side of the creek; the second was further east along the trail, maybe 1/2 mile from A Street and on the south side of the trail about 100 yards. The third was south of 16th Avenue between C and E Streets. There were also large bags of litter by the trash cans after the bike trail crosses east from Gambell, in the socceer field area. We also noted two people on a motor scooter type vehicle, but are unable to provide any detailed description. They were racing along the trail, first east, then west at Gambell.
  • 3 camps spotted on 10/12: #1 - Just east of Valley of the Moon park in woods between E and C streets, 25 yards north of trail. Pretty well hidden. #2 - Just off feeder trail from A street & E. 21st to Chester Creek Trail. Halfway down on the north side, 50 feet off the trail. Grey tarp set up like a tent. #3 - Due south of football stadium between lightposts #76 and #75, 50 feet off trail to south. (Access from Eagle Street & E 21st, then head west on trail.) 2 blue tarp structures. On a lighter note, spotted 7 "legal" and more welcome trail residents on my route, including 2 bulls, 1 cow and 4 young moose.
  • There are two BIG trash dumps on the tour of anchorage trail as you head south from Tudor & Tudor Center Drive, one about a 1/4 mile in just before the trail curves right (where the phone lines are) and the second just before the first beaver pond to the right of the trail. HUGE piles, can't miss, obviously someone drove a truck or other vehicle in to dump stuff, sadly...
  • There is a small pile of debris on the Campbell Creek trail bridge crossing the Tozier Dog track (large sleeping bag/tent and suitcase)it's been there for several days. Also noticed a lien-to down the trail in the trees next to trail bridge near Folker St.
