    Trail Reports - May 2005

  • CT-1, CT-2 and CH-1. Sunday, May 29. 6:00 - 8:00 AM. The gravel on the trail below Resolution Plaza is continuing to get worse. It now covers the trail and gave me a scare crossing it on my mountain bike the first time. It needs to be cleaned up and stabilized or this is going to be a problem all summer long. I think this is my third report on this problem. No evidence of homeless camps on CH-1 or the side trails around the baseballs as far as I can see. Old political graffiti on signs at the boat ramp on Westchester Lagoon and on the pave trail just east of there (pro-democrat). Otherwise all quiet and OK. Reported
  • May 26, 2005. CT-1, CT-2, CH-1. 6:00 - 8:00 PM. Busy night. Skate boarders have moved two benches onto the paved trail between south-bound L street and north-bound Minnesota, just west of the Minnesota under pass. There was a group of half a dozen or so skateboarders hanging around there, but I did not see them "grinding" on it when I went by. There is a new(?) sink hole in the pavement on the north edge of Chester creek trail, just west of Valley of the Moon park, near the under pass. This one could bring down a bike rider if they did not see it. Assisted two kids with a broken bike chain and chatted up some out-of-towners at Westchester Lagoon. I concur with the previous comment about the trail maintenance issue on the Coastal Trail between Westchester Lagoon and Earthquake Park. This looks like a sink hole over a storm drain that got a fast repair job in bad weather, but it needs to get patched up better. I ride by this on my commute everyday, too, and it's been this way for several weeks. There are two warning markers on it, but even those are a hazard. Reported
  • A large hole in the center of the Coastal Trail with two jagged PVC pipes sticking above ground level is a serious hazard. This spot is located on the Coastal Trail about 500 feet from the Marston St exit heading towards Lyn Ary Park. I travel this route quite frequently and was surprised to suddenly see this hazard. Reported
  • During my Trail Watch ride last night I received three complaints from citizens concerning motorized bikes and scooters on the trials. These machines are defiantly a safety concern. What is the municipality policy on motorized vehicles on the trails?
  • There continues, for at least three years to be a need to replace location signage at the trail intersections all along Campbell Creek trail from Minnesota to Old Seward...
  • Underpass lights destroyed underpass at Arctic. This is I believe the same lights that have been reported for two years and remain unrepaired... Reported
  • Politically vulgar graffiti under passes at Old Seward and International vicinity of The Peanut Farm. 22 May 2005
  • Sunday, May 22. 6:30-8:00 AM. CT-1, CT-2, CH-1 Few trail users in the early morning and rain this morning. No wildlife and no suspicious activity to report. Gravel on the trail below resolution plaza continues to get worse. It now covers the trail and is problem, particularly for roller-bladers. Reported
  • Flooding in the tunnel. I found there are some flooding inside the tunnel. Water accumulated inside the tunnel. Reported
  • May 18, 6-8 PM, CT-1, CT-2, CH-1 Many on the Trails tonight. Previously reported maintenance issues are still there (gravel on CT-1, cracked pavement also on CT-1). Otherwise no problems to report.
  • A cover for some type of pipe is missing just north of the Marston trail intersection. Reported
  • CT-1, CT-2, CH-1: Monday, May 16. 5:00 - 6:15 PM The Parking Lot gravel eroding on to the Coastal Trail between Elderberry Park and 3rd is worse. It is now a hazard and needs to be cleaned up and stabilized somehow or this will be an ongoing problem. Assisted one lost biker trying to get to the UAA on Chester Creek Trail. At least a dozen dogs were off the leash, and it was a problem in one instance on Chester Creek Trail (commuters blowing through and dogs getting in the way). Otherwise no problems to report. Reported
  • Vulgar graffiti on the walls of the Campbell Creek A street underpass. Second report. Saturday 14 May 5 PM Reported
  • Transient camp with public drinking. South of the Baseball stadium. Appears to be five or six occupants bedded down in a hollow spot between the creek and the stadium. Prime left field seats for the games. Saturday 5 PM 14 May 2005 Reported
  • Were riding towards town when they saw a small, skinny black bear 5-11-05 around 8:20pm just west of the compost place. I showed up minutes later with a camera, and didn't see the bear. There were also several moose near the trail.
  • 05/08/2005 There's a short steep path leading down from behind Resolution Plaza to the Coastal Trail. What looks like "parking lot gravel" is eroding down the path onto the bike trail. Not much of a problem yet, will get worse every time someone takes a shortcut from the parking lot to the bike trail.
  • Chester Creek trail underpass at A Street has a lot of graffiti on both sides of the creek. There is an active cardboard camp in the woods about 50 feet south of the new Salvation Army construction, at the west end of the construction area. There is also an active tent, with a folding chair, just about 100 feet east of C Street.
