I have several piles of dead spruce awaiting chipping at this location. Call me if you need help finding it @ cell: 727-7961. Thank You….Craig Torrey
  • TAKU LAKE IS A TRAGEDY WAITING TO HAPPEN. Today there were several youngsters swimming with out life preservers. Two were in the middle of the lake on a flimsy inflatable raft. "responsible adults" were supervising contrary to the No Swimming signage. The signs are posted however no where near the swimming areas. The Muni is in jeopardy here for improper and inadequate warnings, please do something to head of another drowning. Reported Aquatics
  • Graffiti under pass of Minnesota and Campbell Creek needs to be removed. Large Blue blazes...Arctic tunnel same graffiti...Please remove it...Thanks Reported to graffiti busters
  • "6/26/2005 6 AM - 8 AM CT-1, CT-2, CH-1 Earthquake Park Parking Lot Broken glass at east end Minor debris at west end Valley of the Moon Parking lot Filled trash cans tipped over .28 miles from downtown start of CT-1. Some gravel removed from path but more has slid down the embankment onto the path narrowing safe passage Not many people on the trails No graffiti noticed.
  • CT-1, CT-2, CH-1. Sunday, June 26. 6-8 AM. Good news all over the place. On my Thursday evening TW patrol and Friday's commute, I noticed that the gravel below Resolution Plaza had reclaimed the Coastal Trail between Elderberry Park and downtown, but I got off-task and did not get this reported following my rides. Now I see this morning that the gravel has been shoveled back off most of the trail!! Also, I noticed a few weeks ago now that the open-end pipe on the Coastal Trail just north of the Marston Drive access has been filled up with hot-patch and is now secure for rollerbladers and road bikes as well. Finally, I saw NO graffiti was observed anywhere on the Chester Creek Trail for the first time this summer. There is broken auto glass in the parking lot at Earthquake Park. I would be very careful about parking there - that's the second time I've seen glass at this location. I moved some fairly big rocks that had been placed on the Chester Creek Trail A Street underpass. Also, I noted that the garbage cans around the disk golf area were full and contained a lot of beer bottles and beer packaging. I reported public drinking at this location last year but have not seen it yet this year on TWA patrols, but the garbage is there. No suspicious activity, no wildlife and no other problems to report.
  • Graffiti on Birch Park playground in the night of 6/20 to 6/21 vandals graffitied on playground equipment in Birch Park on Birch Park Road and also sprayed on the walk-way to the playground, the benches, and the some parts of the railing in the parking area. Reported to graffiti busters
  • Gravel continues to come off the hillside above the trail, making it especially dangerous for rollerbladers and road bikers. Took a shop broom and swept the gravel off the trail, but the gravel needs to be removed from the slope. Reported to maintenance
  • Received a call from a concerned trail user who was attacked by seagulls on the bike trail between Raspberry and 76th Street. He is concerned that the birds may be nesting close to the trails and may attack a child. He hopes that we do not have to close the trail since it is a main corridor, but he is concern for the safety of the children using the trail. Parks & Rec Admin.
  • June 19, 2005 – Small male dog (black/brown)found at 19th / Aurora Drive, Chester Creek Trail(Neighborhood behind Valley of the Moon Park). Wearing a choke collar but NO TAGS.
  • CT-1, CT-2, CH-1. Thursday, June 16. 6:00 - 8:00 PM. Busy, with lots of people on the trails Thursday evening. One broken bike repair at Earthquake park was about the only problem. I did not notice any graffiti on Chester Creek this evening. I am hoping that means it got cleaned up and I did not notice, rather than that I got so used to seeing it so I did not notice it this time! I'll double check on Sunday AM when I ride it again. Once again, gravity is relentlessly pulling gravel on to the Coastal Trail below Resolution Plaza. It covers half the trail as-of my Friday commute. I can tell this is going to be a chronic issue on this stretch of the trail. No drinking, no suspicious activity and no wildlife to report.
  • At Northwood and Dimond, at the bike trail entrance, there is a removable metal post which is supposed to be standing upright and locked in position, acting as a barrier. These are seen throughout the trail system and are locked in place, as vehicle access is restricted. The metal post sits on a metal base and is locked in place. The Northwood/Dimond one is removed, laying off to the side and the lock is missing. The metal base is a safety hazard, as if a bicycle would roll over it - it could cause an accident.
  • Patrol CH 1 & 2 6/16/05 18:00-20:00 HRS Light traffic during patrol , Graffiti, and minor amounts of litter along full length of trail segment. At 19:20 hrs noted pedestrian picking litter up along trail. Made 4 R.T. patrols on this section.
  • June 15, 2005 22:30, Group of people partying at Folker Street access with alcohol present. Camps set up along trail in woods east of Folker. Black Bear spotted on trail near dogsled overpass, warned other bikers of presence.
  • Lights vandalized and inoperative in tunnel under Arctic. These lights have been reported on a number of occasions during the last two years and still have not been repaired...
  • Monday 13 June 8 PM. Serious graffiti in both underpasses. International and Old Seward. Near Peanut Farm and Sourdough Mining Company. Third report please inform Graffiti Busters...Also gang graffiti underpass on Minnesota and Railroad Bridge north of Taku Lake.
  • Taku Lake Monday 13 June. 8 PM. Encouraged two young boys to stop swimming and go home. They had been in the lake for at least 45 minutes and were becoming hypothermic. They denied hypothermic signs and symptoms. Upon leaving the water they discovered that one of their bicycles had been stolen during their swim. Told the boys to go home and report the theft. Bike reportedly was not registered and all manufacturer decals had been removed.
  • Trail System Users Incomplete descriptions make problem areas difficult to find When 'ID'ing beverage related problems that need our attention, please fax a copy of your phone book map with a circle showing area to be addressed. If that isn't handy for you, simply drop off your own map of the problem area at any Brown Jug location, Attention: Ed O'Neill, with contact information. This should help speed up the process for our crew in finding the trashed location. Also please ask your Muni contacts for a numbering system posted along all the trails that is published for the safety of us all should help be needed. Thanks to all for helping us enjoy our well maintained parks and trails. (Over 26 tons of trash removed so far this year from our city parks and trails, thanks to volunteers and supporters of ARBRA. Annual budget now approaching $40,000.+ ) Ed O'Neill Brown Jug, Inc. / Anchorage Responsible Beverage Retailers Association, Inc. 4140 Old Seward Hwy. • Wooden Bridges crossing creek between, I believe C and Gambell have numerous relatively fresh graffiti. Mentions of 'Compton' and other California Cities sprayed.  Reported to graffiti busters
  • 1st: On the 'Old Rondy Trail' at GPS Coordinates (61.1724890582264,-149.793238425627) there is a large pile of liter, I think I saw it first late last fall. It was in the FNBP land, prior to reaching the BLM post, but after the bridge coming in from Tudor road at the Power Station. It is appears to be the remains of a homeless camp that was pulled onto the trail and is probably a pickup trucks worth sitting right on the trail. 2nd: Trail marker sign at the Rovers Run / Moose Meadow Y disappeared two weeks ago. The post is not even there. Top of Rovers Run has no trail marker sign.  Reported
  • CT-1, CT-2, CH-1. Sunday, 6/12/05. 6:00-8:00 AM. Notified APD of an abandoned (probably stolen) youth BMX bike ditched at the overlook benches of Lyn Ary Park. Replaced warning cone over un-capped pipe north of Marston Drive access point to the Coastal Trail. Graffiti still present on the Chester Creek Trail. It seems to start at the A Street tunnel and continues to Seward Highway. The worst area is around C Street. Otherwise no problems or activities to report.
  • Friday, June 10 - Had a near collision with two dogs that were off the leash this morning at Lyn Ary Park. Otherwise all good between Lyn Ary and downtown early this morning. In the afternoon, I rode the length of the Coastal Trail home for a longer commute. I noticed several dogs off the leash this trip. It was the worst at Westchester and again just below the Kincaid park chalet. The dogs off the leash really bother me - that is the second near-miss I've had this year already, and no, I am not riding too fast. I've noticed that this happens in waves - if you see one dog off the leash you'll see ten more before your ride is over. Other nights it is not a problem at all. Also, there is now an orange safety cone over the metal pipe that lost its cap north of Marston Drive access (this has been reported recently). Otherwise nothing unusual or suspicious to report.
  • CT-1, CT-2, CH-1. Thursday, June 9. 6:00 - 8:00 PM I concur with the previous comment about graffiti on Chester Creek Trail. Lots of graffiti that looks gang related on bridges and underpasses between Valley of the Moon Park and Seward Highway. This needs to get cleaned up ASAP or it will invite more. It appears that the graffiti at Earthquake Park was cleaned up already. Nice. No other trail maintenance or other issues to report. Nice to have the shack open at Westchester lagoon. Reported to graffiti busters
  • Gang graffiti? Underpass's of Minnesota. Blue "Blaze"..Railroad under pass north of Taku Lake Red "Kings of The South." Please pass to Graffiti busters and APD. Reported to graffiti busters
  • Mother and calf Moose at Dimond, west end of Campbell Creek trail. Peaceful. Warned several oncoming bikers and walkers. Moose north east of Taku Lake short of Dowling crossing. Trail runner with a loose dog. Dog chased moose. Warned trail runner regarding Moose safety and loose dog.
  • Broken water supply line flowing across the trail from the path leading down from 8310 Somerset - 10:30 Thursday 9 June. Reported to AWWU.
  • There is a large obscenity painted on the top of the Earthquake Park monument in the interpretative area. This is a frequently used area by both visitors and local residents alike. This needs to be taken care of quickly.  Reported to graffiti busters
  • Today (6/6 at about 5PM) about a mile up the Tour of Anchorage trail from Tudor Road, I passed a large pile of clothing, old sleeping bags, trash, and empty beer cans/bottles. It appeared to be a recently used or active "camp" although there was no one around at that time.
  • While riding my bicycle 6/5/05 btw.5pm-6pm at Campbell Creek jct. of Arctic Blvd., on east side of bridge, behind Gallo's Restaurant, noticed "homeless" appearing males, two native, three white, all drinking alcohol, saw plenty of trash around them, even noticed what appeared to be a large plastic pick-up bed tool box, or some kind of cargo carrier, other garbage, back towards bridge. In the past two months I've noticed several of these guys hanging out under these bridges, drinking, kind of concerns me as the wheel-chair access ramp there next to the trail at the creek attracts young kids as well as families and they don't need to be subjected to homeless types hanging around there, drinking, etc.
  • The Chester Creek underpass at A Street is loaded with graffiti. There are obscenities and what appears to be gang related scrawling from one end of the wall to the other. There is also some graffiti on the bridge over the creek to the Mulchay complex and in the underpass at Gambell and the one at Lake Otis. The A street location is by far the worst I've seen in Anchorage. Reported
  • Sunday, June 5. CT-1, CT-2, CH-1. 6:00 - 8:00 AM. The gravel on the Coastal Trail beneath Resolution Plaza has been shoveled off most of the trail and piled on either side of it. It's better now on the trail, but the problem at the top of the slope above the trail still needs to be stabilized. A metal pipe flush with the paved surface of trail has lost its cover just north of the Marston Drive access point on the Coastal Trail. That should be replaced - the pipe could easily flat a road bike tire and ding a rim, and it would drop a roller bladder if they did not see it. Several new graffiti on the Chester Creek Trail - signs on the trail and bridges crossing the trail have been hit between Valley of the Moon Park and A street. One cut-down sapling was laying in the trail just east of Valley of the Moon Park. I pulled the tree off of the trail and tossed it in the brush adjacent to the trail. No wildlife, no suspicious activity and more trail users this morning - the warm weather and sun was pulling them out early today. Reported
  • Thursday, June 2. CT-1, CT-2, CH-1. 6-8 PM. The Good News: The trail maintenance issue on the Coastal Trail at the Marston Drive access point has been repaired! It's a beautiful patch job (the smoothest 3 feet on the Coastal Trail). Thank you!!  The Bad News: the gravel below Resolution Plaza is now an inch deep at the shallowest point - it's on the order of 5 inches deep on the up-hill side of the trail. It's a problem. It's a hazard. It's going to keep being a problem and cause an accident. The only other problem tonight was the disc golf area at the head of the Chester Creek trail. The disc golf is wildly popular and twice tonight groups of 4-6 disc golfers were blocking the trail. It was not a bad problem yet, but as the weather gets nicer I can see some potential for bike/golfer collisions. No camps, no drinking, no wildlife and no other problems. Reported
  • While walking with my dogs at University Lake I came across some trash in the South Fork Chester Creek near where the creek empties into University Lake. I saw some more orange bags and other trash and traced it back to the residential area where the creek enters the park. I volunteer with Anchorage Unleashed with putting bags out and emptying the trash cans. When I got back to the bridge where there was a can stationed. The whole can was gone. Someone emptied that can into the creek. I was able to get some trash but not all and was thinking to get some volunteers to pick up this weekend. Most of the other cans are chained up but this one was not. Is there anything that can be done regarding this? That is one of the most beautiful areas of the park and now while walking down the path you view this trash in the creek. Please let us (Anchorage Unleashed) know how we can be of help. Thank you for your time, Marty Gibson Reported
