Update of Air Quality Ordinances
Health and Human Services
The Anchorage Health Department plans to update its air quality ordinances which are contained in Anchorage Municipal Code, Chapters 15.30 and 15.35. The proposed revisions to these chapters include two emission standards that are more stringent than current state or federal regulations:
1.) a 20% smoke opacity limit for wood burning appliances, and;
2.) a requirement that any outdoor wood boiler newly installed in the Municipality of Anchorage must be EPA Phase-2 qualified.
Documents related to these proposed ordinances, including the Department's justification for them as well as professional reviews of the justification based on economics, meteorology and air quality, and technological feasibility are posted on the Department's Air Quality page. This page also contains information about opportunities for comment as well as contact information for your questions or concerns.
On May 14, 2014 the Anchorage Health and Human Services Commission and the AMATS Air Quality Advisory Committee will together host a public hearing on these two ordinances. The hearing will begin at 5:30 pm on the 4th floor conference room (# 423) of the Anchorage Dept. of Health & Human Services. The Department is located at 825 L St. (corner of 9th and L St.). Free public parking is available on the south side of the building.
