One of the most readable accounts of the activities
of the Alaska Commercial Company can be found
in Libby: The Sketches, Letters and Journal of
Libby Beaman, Recorded in the Pribilof Islands
1879-1880, presented by Betty John, (Houghton
Mifflin, 1989). This fascinating historical sketch is
presented in diary form, complete with
representations of “found objects, (feathers,
crucifixes), photographs of A.C.C. sealing activity,
and wildlife sketches. The first-person narrative
personalizes the scantily documented period of late
nineteenth century Alaska.
