This illustration shows the page documenting the
discovery of the “River Turnagain” from Cook’s
A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean, (W. And A.
Strahan, 1784). This magnificent seven-volume set
is one of the rare book treasures of the Alaska
Collection. Included in this set is an atlas which
contains many of the detailed renderings made by
Cook’s scientific staff. This and other rare books
detailing early exploration of the Pacific Northwest
are available to the public at any time. Seeing the
remarkable condition of these 200 year old volumes
makes for a exciting field trip to the library!
