With the return of high gas prices, People Mover announced today that it will join with other public transportation systems nationwide to participate in the sixth annual National Dump the Pump Day on Thursday, June 16. The slogan of this year’s promotion is “Dump the Pump. Save Money. Ride Transit.”

Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Assocation (APTA) the 2011 National Dump the Pump Day is a day that encourages people to ride public transportation and save money, instead of driving a car. Started in June 2006 when gas prices were $3 per gallon, this national day emphasizes that public transportation is a great travel option that also helps people save money.

Now that gas prices have exceeded $4 per gallon, saving money is on everyone’s minds and public transportation is the quickest way to beat high gas prices.

According to the American Automobile Association’s Your 2011 Driving Costs findings, the average cost of owning and operating a medium-sized automobile, traveling an average of 15,000 miles per year is 57.3 cents per mile. For a 40-mile round-trip commute this comes to $22.92 per day, $481.32 per month and $5,775.84 per year, based on commuting 21 days per month.
