C Street Station

People Mover has served a bus stop at the southwest corner of C Street and 7th Avenue for over 30 years. Despite serving multiple routes and maintaining high ridership, the stop is currently underdeveloped. Buses are required to stop in an active driving lane on a busy arterial while serving riders. The C Street Station does not meet current accessibility standards and has minimal amenities for transit users. This project will address these issues through upgrades that will be constructed in two phases.

Phase I

Phase I will construct a bus turnout that shall allow two buses to pull out of active traffic in order for riders to board/deboard safely and with minimal disruption of through traffic on C Street. The sidewalk adjacent to the new turnout will be reconstructed to be fully accessible in accordance with current guidelines. Phase I will also install foundations, wiring and other improvements to accommodate a future shelter, lighting, message board and other amenities. The existing planter will be relocated to accommodate improvements and further enhanced with new trees and shrubs.

Phase I construction began June 15, 2020 and was completed August 15, 2020. Temporary shelters will be installed until Phase II is constructed.

Phase II

Phase II, scheduled for construction 2021, will install a bus shelter, pedestrian-scale lighting, a message board, street furniture and other amenities appropriate to a high-volume bus stop. The shelter and street furniture will be selected to complement the style and colors of other public facilities in this area of downtown Anchorage.
