Subject: Victim Named and Man Arrested in 9th and Ingra Homicide
Case Number: 13-46006
Anchorage Police have arrested 73-year-old Johnie Jones on charges of Murder in the Second Degree, Manslaughter, and Tampering with Physical Evidence following a shooting that left 36-year-old Sean Mulgrew dead near 9th Avenue and Juneau Street.
On 10/20/13, shortly after 03:30 AM, Anchorage Police responded to a report of several gunshots heard coming from an apartment near the 900 block of Ingra Street. Upon arriving in the vicinity, officers discovered Mulgrew in the area of 9th Avenue and Juneau Street, laying on the ground and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to a witness, shortly after gunshots were fired an individual left the four-plex style apartment building and fled from the scene in an older-model dark blue sedan. The victim then also exited the apartment building from the same door and ran on foot eastbound down the alley between 9th and 10th avenues until he succumbed to his injuries near Juneau Street.
Officers followed the blood trail left by the victim to the apartment complex, where they found Jones, who resides in one of the apartments within the four-plex, wiping fresh blood off the inside of the building’s main door.
During the course of the investigation, physical evidence collected at the scene linked Jones to the fatal shooting of Mulgrew.
The circumstances leading to the incident appear to be drug related.
Mulgrew’s next of kin has been notified, and Jones has been arrested and remanded to the Anchorage Jail with no-bail.
