Subject: Two Men Arrested on Attempted Murder, Assault Charges
Case Number: 14-718
Two men were arrested following a dispute between friends that escalated to attempted murder late last night.
On Sunday, January 5, 2014, at about 11:30 p.m., Anchorage Police responded to a trailer located at 1545 South Hoyt after receiving a 911 call from a man who stated his roommate had just tried to kill him.
The 19-year old victim told officers that he and his two roommates had gotten into an argument over an unpaid bet. The argument escalated when 25-year-old James Smith produced a handgun, pointed it at the victim’s head and pulled the trigger. The loaded gun malfunctioned and did not fire. The pair then got into a struggle over the gun. At some point in time, the third roommate, Kendrick Mathews, 23, struck the victim with his fist. The victim eventually gained control of the gun and ran for the door. As the victim was running away from the trailer, Smith gave chase and struck him with a metal handle from a floor jack. The victim escaped and ran to a nearby convenience store where he called police.
Officers arrested Smith and Mathews and charged them both with assault. Additionally, Smith was charged with attempted murder. Both men were taken to the Anchorage Jail where Smith is being held without bail and Mathews bail was set at $15,000 plus court approved third party.
