Subject: Standoff with Armed Male in Midtown Anchorage Ends Peacefully
On Thursday, Nov. 7 at 11:10 p.m., APD Dispatch received reports of residents hearing shots fired in the area of 50th Avenue and Lake Otis. When officers responded, they located a residence on the 5000 block of Laurel St. where they believed the shots came from. Police determined that an armed male was inside the residence and that two children were also inside the home. Other residents who had been inside the home were able to safely make it out; some before police arrived and some during.
APD’s SWAT team was called out to the scene to initiate negotiations with the armed male who was continually brandishing a gun in front of officers. At 3:39 a.m. the male subject came out of the residence and surrendered to police. Police took 30-year-old Thi Chau into custody and transported him to the Anchorage Jail. Chau has been charged with Assault 3- cause fear of injury w/ weapon, Criminal Mischief 3, Misconduct Involving Weapon 4, Reckless Endangerment, and Misconduct Involving Controlled Substance 4. The children that were inside of the residence during negotiations were unharmed in the incident.
