On Friday December 20, 2013, Anchorage police and fire employees are once again teaming up with midtown Fred Meyers and BAC Transportation for the 14th annual “Shop with a Cop, Shop with a Firefighter” program.
Since 2000, the Anchorage Police Department Employees Association (APDEA) and the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) Local 1264 have worked with local businesses to sponsor a holiday shopping spree to children who may not otherwise be able to afford gifts at Christmas.
Each year, children from local homeless shelters are picked up by limousines, provided by BAC Transportation, and transported to midtown Fred Meyers where the children are greeted by dozens of uniformed police officers and firefighters. Each child is then paired with a public safety professional before embarking on a shopping spree sponsored by APDEA, IAFF, and Fred Meyers.
“The event is very rewarding and heartwarming for all who participate,” says AFD Captain Jason Dolph. “There is nothing like seeing the wonder and excitement in each child as they shop for themselves and the ones they love.”
“Just being able to partner with our fellow public safety representatives and other members of our community to bring these kids a little joy during the holiday season is a wonderful experience,” adds APD Burglary Detective Margaret Bergman. “We look forward to this event every year.”
This year’s event will be held Friday, December 20th, 2013, beginning at 10:00 a.m., at the north entrance of the midtown Fred Meyer. Members of the media are invited and welcome to attend, but discretion is asked on behalf of the children and with respect to their privacy. If you are planning to attend the event, please contact Dani Myren at 748-5416 for help in setting up interviews with participants.
