Subject: REDDI Caller Helps Anchorage Police Apprehend Impaired Driver
At 12:37 p.m. Anchorage Police Dispatch received a REDDI call from a citizen who reported a green Subaru swerving northbound on A Street and was driving up on the curb. The REDDI caller continued to safely follow the suspect vehicle which headed eastbound on 11th Avenue and then northbound on Cordova and was swerving into oncoming traffic. At 12:39 p.m. the REDDI caller reported the suspect vehicle heading eastbound on 9th Avenue where the driver ran a red light and struck two vehicles traveling southbound through the intersection at Gambell. The collision brought the suspect’s vehicle to a stop. The suspect was apprehended by police at the scene and identified as 46-year-old Larry Pennington. Initial police investigation revealed Pennington was likely impaired and he was transported to the Anchorage Jail for DUI processing. Pennington provided a breath sample which indicated he was more than two times the legal limit. One of the drivers involved in the collision was independently transported to a local hospital for minor injuries.
APD would like to thank the REDDI caller for alerting police of the dangerous driver and for safely following the vehicle to assist police in the apprehension of the impaired driver. APD encourages all Anchorage residents to be REDDI (reporting every dangerous driver immediately).
