Subject:  Notice of Lawsuit Re:  Shane Tasi

Case Number:  12-26605

On November 21, 2013, the Anchorage Police Department was served with a notice of a lawsuit by the attorney retained by the family of Shane Tasi.

Below is a joint-statement by Municipal Attorney Dennis Wheeler and APD Police Chief Mark Mew:

On June 9, 2012, APD officers responded to the Tasi residence in reference to a disturbance.  Upon arrival, Tasi approached one of the officers in a threatening manner wielding a wooden broom handle. The officer responded using lethal force against Tasi to stop the threat; Tasi died as a result.

“No officer wants to take the life of another, but the actions of Shane Tasi forced the officer’s hand,” Mew said.

“The public is not financially responsible for Mr. Tasi’s unfortunate and dangerous choices,” Wheeler stated.

Following a review by the Office of Special Prosecutions and Appeals, the officer was cleared of any violation of the law.  During APD’s internal review, the officer was cleared of any policy violations and was released to full duty.
