Case Update at 12:50 p.m.
Anchorage Police have arrested and charged 21-year-old Rodney Stevens, the suspected assailant of the female student who was walking to school this morning. Stevens has been charged with one count of Assault 2. He was transported to the Anchorage Jail where his initial bail was set at $5,000 cash or corporate and TPC.
Initial Release at 10:15 a.m.
Just after 8:30 a.m., School Resource Officer (SRO) Cindy Tanaka of Bartlett High notified APD Dispatch that a female student had entered the school and appeared to have been assaulted. The female reported to police that she had been walking to school and noticed a Native male walking behind her. As she was on school property, she stopped and waited to see if the male would pass her. The male approached the female, introduced himself and told her he was a student at Bartlett High. He then began assaulting her, striking her in the face and wrapping his arms around her neck. The male got up and left the scene.
SRO Tanaka stayed with the victim, while SRO Kristi Mercer of Bartlett High left in search of the suspect. A few minutes later, SRO Mercer located a male subject matching the suspect description walking near Boundary Avenue and Muldoon Road. The male subject was wearing clothing matching the suspect description and Officer Mercer noticed he had blood on his hands. The male subject was taken into custody and will be interviewed by police. The male’s identity has yet to be determined and whether or not he was actually a student of Bartlett High. The female victim was transported to a local hospital to be treated for her injuries.
Thanks to quick action taken by the victim and rapid response by the SROs, Police were able to apprehend the suspect quickly.
