Subject:  Barricaded Subject Taken Into Custody Following Stand Off

Case Number:  13-46819

Anchorage Police responded to an assault this morning that resulted in a 5-hour standoff with police.

At about 8:15 AM, APD received a call from a woman who stated her boyfriend had threatened her with a gun at their apartment located at the 1100 block of Karluk Street.  The woman fled the residence unharmed before calling police.  The boyfriend was later identified as Shane Street, age 46.

When officers arrived, they ordered Street out of the residence.  Street refused to exit the home and communications with him via a PA system were also unsuccessful.  The assault victim told police that Street had multiple weapons inside the residence; therefore, the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team was called to the scene.

Officers diverted traffic around the block surrounding the residence (Karluk Street to Juneau Street, 11th Avenue to 12th Avenue) at about 8:50 AM and evacuated some residents from their homes while other residents were told to stay inside their homes until police could resolve the matter.

At about 2:23 PM, just prior to SWAT making entry into Street’s unit, Street opened the front door of the apartment next to his, wearing a woman’s wig.  Officers had evacuated the residents from that unit several hours earlier, but Street managed to gain access through the crawlspace and into their vacant apartment.

Officers took Street into custody and transported him to the Anchorage Jail where he is being held without bail.  Street was charged with Assault, Burglary and Tampering with Evidence.  Officers obtained a search warrant for Street’s home and recovered two guns.

Residents were allowed to re-enter the neighborhood at about 2:40 PM.

The Anchorage Police Department would like to thank the residents and motorists for their cooperation during this incident.
