Anchorage Police Department To Begin Turnagain Arm Highway Patrol

ANCHORAGE- Beginning October 1, the Anchorage Police Department (APD) will begin regular patrols of the Seward Highway along Turnagain Arm.

“Over the previous two years the Legislature has cut 32 Alaska State Trooper positions. We had to find a way for APD to fill the void along Turnagain Arm. As APD has grown, we found a way to fill that gap,” said Mayor Ethan Berkowitz.

APD officer patrols are paid for by a one-time legislative grant. Municipality residents can expect a minimum of two officers on the highway from Potter’s Marsh to Mile 75 when on patrol. The Alaska State Troopers Bureau of Highway Patrol will still provide limited coverage when available.

“I am pleased that we have found a temporary solution to promoting public safety in this corridor of Anchorage,” stated APD Chief Justin Doll. “We look forward to having a visible presence on the highway.”
