Anchorage Police have identified the driver killed in a two-vehicle collision on the Seward Highway on Saturday, December 7, 2013 as 82-year-old Robert Brooks. His next of kin have been notified.
Originial Release on December 7 at 3:00 p.m.:
Anchorage Police responded to a two vehicle traffic collision resulting in the death of a male driver near Mile 112 on the Seward Highway (just north of McHugh Creek).
At 10:25 a.m. APD Dispatch received multiple calls reporting a two-vehicle collision on the Seward Highway at Mile 112. Callers reported that a male occupant had been ejected from one of the vehicles involved. Officers and AFD medics responded to the scene; the ejected male driver was pronounced dead at the crash site.
An initial investigation by APD officers found that a White Chevy Silverado Truck was traveling southbound on the Seward Highway when a green Chevy Tracker traveling northbound lost control and slid into the oncoming lane, striking the Chevy truck. The male driver of the Chevy Tracker was ejected from the vehicle.
The male driver of the Chevy Silverado sustained non-life threatening injuries from the crash and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. Both were the sole occupants of the vehicles. Highway conditions at the time of the collision included slick roads and icy fog.
The highway was closed down by APD in both directions near the crash site at 10:50 p.m. Southbound traffic was being rerouted at the Anchorage Scales and northbound traffic was being redirected near Mile 112.
The highway was reopened just after 3:00 p.m.
Police are in the process of notifying the next-of-kin of the deceased driver.
