Case Number: 13-42069
Anchorage Police were called to the Anchorage Community Mental Health Services building, located at 2735 East Tudor Road at about 6:50 a.m. yesterday in reference to a man found unconscious outside their front door. According to the employee that found him, the man was crouched under the overhang, was bleeding heavily from the head and did not appear to be breathing. Medics responded and transported the victim to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. The body was identified by fingerprints as Ferdinand Marquez, age 50. Marquez lived in both California and Alaska, working seasonally on Alaska fishing boats.
Detectives retrieved video footage from nearby businesses which show that Marquez was attacked by four suspects who struck him multiple times with a road sign as well as punched and kicked him. After interviewing several witnesses in nearby businesses, detectives developed leads as to the identities of the suspects as well as their home address, which was in close proximity to where the assault took place. A liquor store clerk told police that one of the suspects entered the store twice that evening; the second time with blood on his clothes, swollen knuckles, smelling of alcohol, and claiming to have just beaten someone up because he “messed with him and his friends.”
At about 2:21 p.m. yesterday afternoon, Anchorage Police reported seeing a male matching the description of the primary assailant, identified as David Walent. Detectives apprehended Walent and transported him to APD headquarters for questioning along with all of the occupants of the apartment where Walent resided.
Following questioning, the suspects were charged with the following:
- David Walent (24 years-old) - Murder 1, Murder 2, Robbery 1
- Jerrick Blankenship (18 years-old) - Murder 2 x2, Robbery 1
- Matt Martin (22 years-old) - Murder 2 x2, Robbery 1
- Lewis Martin (33 years-old) - Murder 2
The four suspects were later taken to the Anchorage Jail, each held without bail. Arraignments are scheduled to take place this afternoon.
