On 1-8-10 Anchorage Police officers responded to the report of a subject selling suspicious copper to a metals recycling firm.  The suspect, Charles Quales III, a 49 year old Anchorage resident, was stopped not far from the recycling center, driving a red 1999 Ford Expedition.  During the course of the investigation, officers discovered that the metal Quales was attempting to recycle had been stolen in a burglary from a Providence Hospital worksite.  The red Ford had also been stolen from a Microtel parking lot and the theft discovered by the owner when he returned from his trip to Hawaii on 11-22-09.

Charles Quales III has been charged with Burglary 2nd degree, Theft 2nd degree, two counts of Theft 3rd degree, Stolen Vehicle 1st degree and Driving with License Revoked.  He is scheduled to be arraigned after 1430 hours on 1-9-10.

Copper theft has become common from jobsites all over Alaska and the lower 48 since the price of non-precious metals has risen dramatically.  Thieves can get as much as $1.25 to $2.00 per pound for copper at recyclers.  Often the targets of such thefts are construction sites where copper pipe and wiring are common items.  Thieves often take the pipe or wire, cut it up or burn the insulation off and sell it to the recyclers.

The APD Theft Unit has designated a detective, Det. Purcell to investigate these cases.

Note: A criminal charge is merely an accusation of criminal wrongdoing.  All persons charged with crimes are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty by a court of law.
