On 1-19-10 detectives from Anchorage Police Department Special Victims Unit arrested James Stanton, a 53 year old Alaska State probation officer, on charges of Official Misconduct and Bribery. The arrest came at the conclusion of an investigation which began when a female probationer reported that she had been trading sexual relations and money for favors from Stanton, who supervised part of her probation dealing with her compliance with conditions of probation. Detectives discovered that Stanton certified that the probationer’s urinalysis testing showed negative results for the presence of drugs and alcohol as required by her probation, in return for money and sexual favors, even though she admitted to using these substances prior to testing.
James Stanton was arrested by SVU and Vice Unit detectives in the basement of the Nesbett Courthouse where he worked in the ASAP program. He was jailed on $10,000 bail with a Court approved third party custodian required for release.
Detectives believe that there may be other probationers who have been victimized by this suspect and request that anyone with information about such criminal activity contact Anchorage Police Department at 786-8900.
Note: A criminal charge is merely an accusation of criminal wrongdoing. All persons charged with crimes are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty by a court of law.
