Chief of Police Biography

Brian Porter was born in Seattle, WA on May 2, 1938. He has lived in Alaska since 1951.
Chief Porter joined the Department in June, 1960 as a patrolman. He is a 1972 graduate of the Police Institute, Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, and holds an Associate degree in Police Administration from the University of Alaska. He is a 1981 graduate of the FBI National Executive Institute. Chief Porter is a past president of APOA and is a member of the Alaska Police Standards Council. He has worked as a Patrol Officer, vice officer, Traffic Bureau Sergeant, Investigator, Community Relations Supervisor, Training and Personnel Lieutenant, Captain in charge of Administrative Services, and Deputy Chief. He was appointed Chief in August 1980.
After retiring from APD, Brian Porter served on the Anchorage Assembly 1989 to 1992. 1993 he was elected to the Alaska State House of Representatives and served for several years.
