Harry Clinch Kavanaugh
May 3, 1923 - January 3, 1924
Harry C. Kavanaugh was appointed as Chief of Police with a salary of $250 a month. He was recruited from Cordova by one of the City Councilmen and was a U.S. Deputy Marshall. Chief Kavanaugh was sworn in on May 3rd and assumed his duties on May 4, 1923.
Harry Kavanaugh was born in New York November 27, 1880.
Chief Kavanaugh was short while making an arrest and died on January 3, 1924. Anchorage Daily Times, dated January 2, 1924 read:
KAVANAUGH WOUNDED: ASSAILANT IS KILLED - Great excitement prevailed in Anchorage this afternoon when it learned that HARRY KAVANAUGH, special City Police Officer, was shot and probably fatally wounded at 3 o'clock by Knik Nicholai. Nicholai was later shot and instantly killed by Police Officer Charlie Watson. The attempted murder and killing occurred at a log cabin situated at Eight and East B Street.
Kavanaugh is buried in San Pedro, California.
