Qualifications

All applicants must have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.

In order to be considered for positions that require skill to type at a net of 35 WPM applicants must document their typing speed on the application AND provide a certified copy of the typing test results, or provide an attachment with this information. 

Initial testing for most positions will consist of a Nelson/Denny Reading Comprehension exam and a Personal History Questionnaire, (preliminary to the background investigation), assessment interview, Oral Boards and Background Investigation.

Specific positions may require additional experience and/or certifications.

Salary and Benefits Summary (2008 figures used)

  • The Municipality of Anchorage has an excellent health coverage plan for the employee and eligible dependents.
  • There are currently eleven and a half paid holidays per year.  
  • Upon completion of probation, employees with an Associate’s Degree qualify for a 4% increase over base pay; employees with a Bachelor’s Degree qualify for an 8% increase over base pay.
  • The Municipality agrees to pay tuition and book expenses for all employees enrolled in accredited university courses.
  • Vacation currently accrues at the rate of 8.31 hours per pay period (every two weeks), which totals 27 days per year.  Vacation accrual rate increases after 61 months of service (to 9.23 hours) and again after 121 months of service (to 10.15 hours).
  • Sick leave accrues at the rate of 6 hours per pay period, or 19.5 days per year to a maximum bank of 520 hours.
  • Anchorage Police Department employees are offered an excellent retirement plan through the Alaska Public Employees Retirement System (PERS).
  • Employees may participate in 401K with 1:1 matching funds up to $2,000 and/or 457 deferred compensation plans. 
  • The Municipality furnishes all uniforms and pays for all uniform cleaning.
  • Anchorage Police Department employees are required to participate in the Anchorage Police Department Employees Association (APDEA).
