Out-of-State Applicants

What is an Out-of State Applicant?

An out of state applicant is defined as an applicant from outside the State of Alaska, or more than 250 road miles from Anchorage, or any applicant from a location off the Alaska road system. 

Out-of State Applicant Process

All out-of-state applicants must complete both sides and sign the Request to Test form and submit it to the Department by mail or in person.   All out-of-state applicants must come to Anchorage to test.  Click on the Forms page to download all necessary forms.

The Anchorage Police Department makes every effort to accommodate out-of-state applicants by consolidating the application steps into two (2) one-week visits to Anchorage.  We will attempt to provide as much advance notice as possible to allow for lesser expensive plane reservations.  The two visits are 5-7 weeks apart and contain the following steps:

First Week

  • Written Testing 
  • Physical Agility Test
  • Preliminary Interview
  • Psychological Written Assessment

Second Week

  • Psychological Interview
  • Polygraph
  • Medical Assessment

Following the completion of the second week of processing, the Backgrounds Unit will complete the background investigation and obtain results of all assessments, interviews and tests.  The completed packet is then submitted for selection or non-selection by the Chief of Police.  This final process can take 4-6 weeks to complete.

All travel, lodging and accommodation expenses are the responsibility of the applicant.  The Anchorage Police Department does not provide financial assistance or relocation allowances to selected or non-selected applicants.
