How do I start the application process?

To get the process started submit a request to test form.  The form can be faxed in to 907-786-8618, dropped off in person at Police Headquarters, or mailed in to:

After submitting my request to test form how long will it take to get a response?

It typically takes about 1-2 weeks to get your response back in the mail.

Do I have to come to Anchorage to conduct the testing?

Out of state applicants typically have to make two separate one week trips to Anchorage to complete the selection process.  The other option is if the APD Backgrounds & Recruiting Unit conducts testing in the lower 48 states.  We typically conduct one to two trips to the lower 48 per year.  For up to date information about testing locations and dates, sign up for the recruitment newsletter.

I can't find my letter of instructions, where and what time is the entry level testing?

For those that have already submitted their request to test form and been approved for testing, the entry level test is conducted at the APD Training Center at 3760 W. Dimond Blvd.  Those with last names that begin with A-L test at 8:00 am; those with last names that begin with M-Z test at 1:00 pm.  Be sure to arrive at least 20 minutes early and bring your driver's license. 

Are there any preference points for Veterans, Prior law enforcement, or College education?

There are no preference points for any particular group of people over another.  Everyone has the same opportunity as anyone else.

How many times per year does APD conduct the hiring process?

The hiring process is conducted four times per year, every January, April, July and October.  The next two test dates are usually posted on the website.

How often can I reapply?

An applicant who is unsuccessful during the entry level test or the physical abilities test is eligible to reapply for the next testing cycle.  If an applicant is unsuccessful at any subsequent stage (preliminary interview, psych assessment, medical assessment, polygraph, Chief selection), then there is a 2 year wait before you are eligible to reapply.

What are my chances of getting hired?

On average about 5% of those that test are successful in the selection process.

How many officers does APD hire each year?

It varies from year to year, depending on current vacancies, additional positions added, etc.

Do I have to sign a contract to work "X" number of years for APD?

No.  You are under no written obligation to stay with our department

If hired, does APD provide relocation assistance?

No.  APD does not provide financial assistance/reimbursement.

How often does APD conduct its academies?

Typically, APD conducts one to two academies per year.

Can I pay my own way through the academy?

No, our academy is not open to the general public.  Only those that we have hired are allowed to attend the academy.

Where is the academy located?

The academy is located at the Anchorage Police Department Training Center, 3760 W Dimond Blvd, Anchorage, AK

Does APD provide housing for recruits in the academy?

No, it is non residential.  Recruits must provide their own place to live as you go home at the end of each day and for your 3 day weekend.

Do I get paid while attending the academy?

Yes, the current pay rate is $22.28 per hour for new recruits, $27.83 per hour for lateral officers.

What happens after I graduate from the academy?

After you graduate from the academy you then move into Field Training.  Field Training is about 19 weeks.  You will ride with a senior officer who evaluates your performance and trains you on a daily basis.

Do Officers have to live within the city limits?

No.  APD officers live in Anchorage, Eagle River, Chugiak, Palmer, and Wasilla to name a few.  The only requirement is that you report to work on time.

After I complete training, how long before I can apply for SWAT?

Typically it takes 3 years before new officers are eligible to apply for any of the specialty positions or units within the department.

How does one get picked for SWAT or other specialty positions?

Each position has a separate selection process which may include; written testing, physical testing, psychological assessment, oral board, personnel file review, etc.  At the end of the selection process the candidates are ranked and the vacancies are filled accordingly.
